‘Winter Solider’ teaser trailer is … awesome

cap and winter soldier

I think maybe interest in the new teaser trailer for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” broke iTunes today.

At any rate, the trailer didn’t play on the iTunes site for nearly an hour after its scheduled noon release.

It’s working now, however, but here are some highlights:

redford DC

Plenty of Robert Redford, looking great as the head of SHIELD. Yes, even above Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

And an ultimate showdown?

Here’s the trailer.

I can’t wait for April 4.

With “Thor: The Dark World” coming Nov. 8, Marvel has us looking ahead to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

Yeah, like that took a lot of work.

Here’s a pic of Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson as Steve Rogers and Nick Fury from the movie, which comes out in April.

A teaser trailer debuts tomorrow.

Cap’s back: ‘Winter Soldier’ teaser poster

So this is cool.

The teaser poster for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was released today.

And we’re told a new teaser trailer comes out in a couple of days.

The poster confirms some things we had already heard:

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is mostly (or entirely) set in the present day.

It’s mostly set in Washington DC.

It’s a political thriller in some respects (that follows, considering the setting).

SHIELD is heavily involved, and it looks like Cap is about to jump out of a SHIELD aircraft and the helicarrier is visible.

The movie’s to be released April 4.

Two credits scenes in ‘Thor: The Dark World?’

Thor-The-Dark-World

I was already looking forward to Nov. 8 and “Thor: The Dark World.”

Then today ScreenCrush.com reports that initial screens indicate the latest Marvel movie will have two credits sequences, not unlike “The Avengers.”

There’s supposedly a scene part way through the credits, like the Thanos scene in “The Avengers,” and an after-credits stinger, like the restaurant scene at the end of “The Avengers” and the Bruce Banner appearance at the end of “Iron Man 3.”

True? We should get some kind of confirmation soon.

And the movie opens Nov. 8.

Today in Halloween: Captain America goggles

hallow cap goggles

I think I might have to break down and get these.

Readers of this blog might know that Captain America is, in some ways, my favorite superhero.

avengers 4

My earliest comic-book experiences revolved around a copy of Avengers 4, the milestone silver age comic in which Cap returns from the dead, given to me by a neighbor.

Cap’s costume in the big-screen movies often includes some kind of cowl/mask but often features just helmet and goggles.

You can get Iron Man or Spider-Man versions of these goggles, but really, they only make absolute sense for Cap to wear.

Or Halloween-night versions of Cap.

If I could only find a set big enough for my big Roysdon-sized noggin.

Captain America on the Fourth of July

It’s pretty easy to draw a line between Captain America, the classic Marvel Comics character, and the Fourth of July, the U.S.’ most patriotic holiday.

The guy’s dressed in the Stars and Stripes, for pete’s sake.

But those who dismiss Cap and his alter ego, Steve Rogers, as an empty American symbol are wrong.

As a matter of fact, Cap’s real patriotism is what the Marvel movie producers got so right in “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “The Avengers.”

avengers 4 cap returns

Like Superman, Captain America is a man without his own people. When Cap returned in Avengers No. 4, he was nearly 20 years removed from his era and his battleground, World War II. That “man out of time” feeling, which directors Joe Johnson and Joss Whedon captured so well in those movies, is what sets Cap apart from hip, funny heroes like Spider-Man.

cap superhero squad

Heck, the former Cartoon Network series “Superhero Squad,” which made Marvel heroes appealing and accessible to young fans, even got Cap right even as they poked fun at him. Cap in that series was always talking about some conversation he had with FDR or making some other “frozen in amber” reference. It was as funny as it was on-the-nose.

But besides Cap’s stranger in a strange land status, he’s also known for doing what’s right. Always. For a period in his comic in the 1970s, that meant forgoing the Cap name and costume and, thanks to disillusionment with the government, operating as Nomad, the man without a country.

I’m looking forward to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” next year in great part because it looks like more of a political thriller than a spandex slugfest and in great part because it looks to pit Cap against SHIELD. Cap’s character in “The Avengers” certainly showed more than a little skepticism about SHIELD and Nick Fury’s motives. That’s perfectly in keeping with the character and I couldn’t be happier about that.

So while Steve Rogers would, if he existed, be enjoying a hot dog and some fireworks today, he’d also be mindful of what enabled him to enjoy the Fourth of July, the sacrifices of men and women that allowed that and the individual liberties of the people around him.

Because while Captain America might have been a man without his own people, he has embraced – and been embraced by – his new people.

First look: The Falcon from ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

We’re seeing more and more from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” now that filming has begun.

Here’s Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon, Captain America’s modern-day partner.

Here’s how the duo looked in the comics.

It’s likely The Falcon’s wings will be added in post-production, so we’ll have another glimpse to look forward to in a few months.

The movie comes out in April 2014.

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ set pics

It would be a fool’s errand to try to keep up with all the Marvel Comics movies in planning, in production and awaiting release.

That being said, the Daily Mail and the Interwebs were rife today with set pictures from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” showing Cap (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johanssen) confronting SHIELD agent Jasper Sitwell (Maximiliano Hernandez) in a scene.

Looks like Black Widow is about to put the hurt on Sitwell.

I’m just not feelin’ the hair.

The movie comes out in April 2014. Less than a year!

First look: ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

captain america the winter soldier

Yes, we know production has only just begun on “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Yes, we know the sequel won’t hit theaters until 2014. But doggone it, we have to get excited about the first official photo from filming.

The picture appears to show actor Chris Evans, returning to play Cap for a third time, behind the scenes on the set with his shield on his back and a big SHIELD emblem on the wall.

We knew SHIELD plays a big role in the movie, with Samuel Jackson returning as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson returning as the Black Widow and Robert Redford (!) debuting as SHIELD officer Alexander Pierce.

What’s so good about this picture? It’s the way Chris Evans is wearing Cap’s shield. All of us growing up reading Marvel Comics saw Steve Rogers and Cap portrayed many times as wearing the shield on his back. Sometimes Steve even wore it under his street clothes, particularly under his jacket. While that seems kind of cumbersome (duh), it implied that he was as ready as Spider-Man or Superman to leap into action.

What’s not so good? Okay, I will admit to being distracted by a couple of things in this photo. Namely, the things on either side of Evans. What are those? Is that SHIELD helicarrier plumbing?

We can tell the shot is behind the scenes because of the light reflecting screens on each side of the SHIELD emblem.

But no worries. I totally trust Marvel, Evans and the directors of the sequel, Anthony and Joe Russo.

I’m ready for some Cap action and I’m counting down to April 4, 2104.
