‘Thor’ trading Asgard for Fortress of Solitude?

So director Shane Black is making a Doc Savage movie, based on the pulp magazine hero, as his follow-up to “Iron Man 3.”

That’s enough to have old fans of Clark Savage pretty happy. And we already knew that.

But who could conceivably play the bred-from-birth-to-be-perfect Savage, a towering man of action and intellect?

It’s all over the web already, but an interviewer asked Black about “Thor” and “Avengers” and “Rush” actor Chris Hemsworth.

“Not a bad idea,” Black replied.

Really not a bad idea at all.

Hemsworth is already about as tall as Doc. He’s got the physique and the features. He can pull off the longish hair if Black decides to go with something other than the James Bama skullcap look for Doc.

And I think he’d be totally suitable as the prototype for later comic book characters like Superman.

It probably won’t happen … but maybe it should.

New ‘Thor: The Dark World’ poster

There’s something old-fashioned, almost “Star Wars” or “Raiders of the Lost Ark” -like, about the new poster for “Thor: The Dark World.”

Maybe it’s the lack of photoshopped photos of the cast, standing in random poses and staring off at nothing.

No, it’s a nicely done and composed poster – not unlike that for “Captain America: The First Avenger” or “Iron Man 3” – that shows the ever-growing cast, including Christopher Eccleston looming as villain Malekith the Accursed.

We even get Idris (“We are canceling the apocalypse!”) Elba as sturdy Heimdall.

“Thor: The Dark World” comes to theaters on Nov. 8.

Marvel Phase 2: What we want to see

It’s pretty easy to talk about what movies and characters we want to see in Marvel’s cinematic Phase Two, leading up to the “Avengers” sequel in 2015.

We’re already know we’re getting “Iron Man 3” in just a few days, the “Thor” sequel this fall, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” after that. “Ant-Man” fits in there somewhere.

But what’s the spirit of what we want to see in the next set of movies?

The “this is new and exciting” feel of the original “Iron Man.” We’d seen a lot of superhero movies before 2008, but “Iron Man” was the first to create such a believable universe – the Marvel universe – of characters. You knew even before Nick Fury’s walk-on at the end that we were going to see this universe explored.

The surprise of “The Incredible Hulk.” Yes, the Hulk was better in “The Avengers.” Yes, Joss Whedon got the characters of Bruce Banner and “The Other Guy” just right. But 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” had some great moments, including even non-Greenskin moments, especially the scene where Bruce Banner leads a pack of Thunderbolt Ross’ soldiers on a chase through the slums of a South American city. It was a very “Bourne” sequence and had little in the way of typical superhero effects. But it sure was cool. “Ant-Man” has the potential to surprise us like that.

The heart of “Captain America.” We will be lucky indeed if the “Cap” sequel or any of the other Phase Two movies have the old-fashioned heart of Joe Johnston’s original. Cap’s story could have been corny. But this “kid from Brooklyn” was heart-warming and endearing and exciting at the same time.

The spectacle of “The Avengers.” It had never been done, but Joss Whedon did it. He made a movie about a bunch of super-powered heroes that didn’t feel crowded or outlandish but had more than its share of large-scale scenes and epic battles. We need that in Phase 2. Imagine how wowed we could feel when we see The Falcon take flight in the “Cap” sequel.

The feel of “there’s a greater universe out there” of all the Phase One movies. It’s not just about loading the movies with guest stars and recurring characters. It’s implying – with greater or lesser degrees of subtlety – that there’s a bigger story lurking just around the corner from what’s happening on screen. Remember wondering how SHIELD played into all these stories? Who the heck that guy Thanos was at the end of “Avengers?” If we’re lucky, Phase Two will leave us wondering and wanting more.

First look: The trailer for ‘Thor: The Dark World’

Thor Jane Thor The Dark World

The first “Thor” movie took some of us by surprise. The Asgardean Avenger was never a favorite character of mine, so while I didn’t doubt that Marvel would do well with his debut movie, I wasn’t expecting as much as I did from “Captain America.” But I was pleasantly surprised.

So with “Iron Man 3” just a couple of weeks away, we get a trailer for “Thor: The Dark World,” which opens Nov. 8.

The trailer looks good, although it was amusing to see the preview opening in steel-gray modern-day London. That city is getting a hell of a beating this year, between this and “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

Most of the cast gets a few shots in the trailer, led by Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, of course.

Christopher Eccleston Thor the Dark World

And can that possibly be Christopher Eccleston under all that makeup as villain Malekith?

Tom Hiddleston Loki Thor the Dark World

And they saved the best for last: Tom Hiddleston, rocking some “Rock of Ages” hair, as Loki.

Wonder if Odin had SHIELD build that glass box?

First poster: ‘Thor the Dark World’

With all the attention “Iron Man 3” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and even “Guardians of the Galaxy” is getting, we need a little love for the “Thor” sequel.

So here’s the first teaser poster for “Thor the Dark World.”

No helmet – sorry, half the Internet – but Chris Hemsworth looks ready to throw that hammer.

Coming this November.
