‘Winter Soldier’ and ‘X-Men’ marketing 101

empire covers xmen

Apparently someone at Fox believes the old saying that any publicity is good publicity.

That must be the idea behind the 25 different covers released by Empire magazine featuring 25 different characters (including a non-character, director Bryan Singer) for “X-Men Days of Future Past.”

Some of them aren’t bad, like the ones above featuring Magneto, Professor X and Wolverine.

Some are just inexplicable, including the one showcasing the movie’s version of Quicksilver.

In the comics, if you’re not familiar with the character, Quicksilver (along with his sister, Scarlet Witch) was part of the second wave of Avengers recruits back in the 1960s, serving under Captain America and replacing Iron Man, Hulk and Thor.

It was a plot point that the new Avengers, including Hawkeye, were drastically less powerful than the original team.

And I’m wondering if when Joss Whedon has Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch join the Avengers in the 2015 sequel, there won’t be some similar storylines playing out.

But in “Days of Future Past,” it appears that Quicksilver is … what, would you say, a punk kid with really bad hair and an outfit that’s even worse?

Here he is, side by side with the comic-book version.

The X-Men Quicksilver is a look that was certain to – and did – inspire derision.

Then there’s the latest marketing from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” due out in April.

captain america winter soldier poster

There’s this great poster featuring Cap and the main cast, including Robert Redford as SHIELD honcho Alexander Pierce. It’s right out of the Marvel marketing playbook and is reminiscent of posters for “The Avengers” and others in the Marvel cinematic universe.

And then there are the character posters, including those for Nick Fury and Black Widow (photoshopping aside).

That’s how you market characters. And I’m looking forward to one featuring Falcon. Please.

Cool, cool, cool

Here are things that make me smile.

Like that picture, above, of Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie as Captain America and the Falcon from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

And this, Jaimie Alexander as Sif from “Thor: The Dark World.” She’s going to appear in a February episode of “Agents of SHIELD.”

And here, Hayley Atwell, in her role of “Agent Carter” from “Captain America,” starring in a pilot for ABC for a possible series about the early days of SHIELD.

‘Winter Solider’ teaser trailer is … awesome

cap and winter soldier

I think maybe interest in the new teaser trailer for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” broke iTunes today.

At any rate, the trailer didn’t play on the iTunes site for nearly an hour after its scheduled noon release.

It’s working now, however, but here are some highlights:

redford DC

Plenty of Robert Redford, looking great as the head of SHIELD. Yes, even above Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

Cap (Chris Evans) looking worried, and rightly so.

And Natasha, The Black Widow.

And an ultimate showdown?

Here’s the trailer.

I can’t wait for April 4.

Cap’s back: ‘Winter Soldier’ teaser poster

So this is cool.

The teaser poster for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was released today.

And we’re told a new teaser trailer comes out in a couple of days.

The poster confirms some things we had already heard:

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is mostly (or entirely) set in the present day.

It’s mostly set in Washington DC.

It’s a political thriller in some respects (that follows, considering the setting).

SHIELD is heavily involved, and it looks like Cap is about to jump out of a SHIELD aircraft and the helicarrier is visible.

The movie’s to be released April 4.

Save the dates: More Marvel movies

dr strange

The least surprising news out of Hollywood this week: More Marvel Comics movies are on the horizon.

Marvel announced a still-unspecified movie would debut in theaters on July 8, 2016.

That’s in addition to Marvel movies – also unspecified – set for May 6, 2016, and May 5, 2017 that were announced in recent weeks.

Those are all in the wake of previously-announced – and specified – Marvel movies for 2015, namely the sequel to “The Avengers” and “Ant-Man.”

We’ll know – maybe as early as next month’s San Diego Comic Con – details of those 2016 and 2017 movies. Last year, for example, Comic Con audiences were the first to hear the full titles for upcoming Marvel movies like “Thor: The Dark World” (out this November) and 2014 titles like “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

So we’ll know before long if those upcoming movies will be sequels featuring Thor and Cap or new movies featuring the likes of “Dr. Strange” and “Black Panther.”

Some online reports this week indicated that “Dr. Strange” – the movie and character – would be a running thread through future Marvel movies not unlike the way Iron Man has been in the first set of movies.

It would be an interesting choice, considering that Stephen Strange, surgeon turned master of the mystic arts, is a more fantasy-oriented character than any we’ve seen so far (with the possible exception of Thor) and making him a central character like Iron Man is an indication that Marvel is edging further “out there” in its films. It would also, if cast correctly, be a character that could equal Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in the hearts of moviegoers – a good move since Downey is only so far signed to appear in the two “Avengers” sequels.

Here’s looking forward to some new news.

First look: The Falcon from ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

We’re seeing more and more from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” now that filming has begun.

Here’s Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon, Captain America’s modern-day partner.

captain america and the falcon

Here’s how the duo looked in the comics.

It’s likely The Falcon’s wings will be added in post-production, so we’ll have another glimpse to look forward to in a few months.

The movie comes out in April 2014.

First look: ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

captain america the winter soldier

Yes, we know production has only just begun on “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Yes, we know the sequel won’t hit theaters until 2014. But doggone it, we have to get excited about the first official photo from filming.

The picture appears to show actor Chris Evans, returning to play Cap for a third time, behind the scenes on the set with his shield on his back and a big SHIELD emblem on the wall.

We knew SHIELD plays a big role in the movie, with Samuel Jackson returning as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson returning as the Black Widow and Robert Redford (!) debuting as SHIELD officer Alexander Pierce.

What’s so good about this picture? It’s the way Chris Evans is wearing Cap’s shield. All of us growing up reading Marvel Comics saw Steve Rogers and Cap portrayed many times as wearing the shield on his back. Sometimes Steve even wore it under his street clothes, particularly under his jacket. While that seems kind of cumbersome (duh), it implied that he was as ready as Spider-Man or Superman to leap into action.

What’s not so good? Okay, I will admit to being distracted by a couple of things in this photo. Namely, the things on either side of Evans. What are those? Is that SHIELD helicarrier plumbing?

We can tell the shot is behind the scenes because of the light reflecting screens on each side of the SHIELD emblem.

But no worries. I totally trust Marvel, Evans and the directors of the sequel, Anthony and Joe Russo.

I’m ready for some Cap action and I’m counting down to April 4, 2104.

Marvel Phase 2 concept art: ‘Cap,’ ‘Guardians’

captain america the winter soldier

Yes, it doesn’t take much more than a couple of cool paintings to make us happy.

The Internets were downright jovial today with the release – maybe officially, maybe unofficially, maybe associated with the big box set of Marvel Phase 1 films on disc – of some concept art from Marvel Phase 2.

Above is a very cool piece of art for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” The title indicates the movie will likely follow the comics storyline in which Cap’s friend and former sidekick, Bucky Barnes, comes back after decades presumed dead and appears as the Winter Soldier, a Russian agent.

guardians of the galaxy concept art

And here’s some concept art for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which follows the Cap sequel into theaters by several months in 2014.

Looks like the gang’s all here, or at least the recognizable ones, including Groot the living tree thingy and Rocket Raccoon … the talkin’, scrappin’ space raccoon.

Okay, yes, it sounds odd. But I think it’s supposed to.

Anyway, enjoy.
