Sequel, sequel: Stephen King’s ‘Doctor Sleep’

“Doctor Sleep” is, of course, Stephen King’s sequel to “The Shining,” his 1977 horror novel about a malevolent old hotel, the family that comes unraveled during a long, isolated winter there and the particular psychic talent, “the shining,” that King introduced in the book.

But for a few reasons, “Doctor Sleep” almost reminded me more of two other King books, “Salem’s Lot” and “The Stand.” It’s almost like two sequels in one. Or three.

Maybe that’s not surprising. “Doctor Sleep” makes at least one reference to the menacing town that provided “Salem’s Lot” its name. And the shining – the psychic power, not the book itself – is sprinkled through a few of King’s books, most notably “The Stand.”

But “Doctor Sleep” reminds me of “Salem’s Lot” and “The Stand,” I think, because it doesn’t have the same sense of isolation and claustrophobia as “The Shining.” “Doctor Sleep” is quite road-bound, from its lead character’s wanderings in the opening chapters to the cross-country travels both the protagonists and antagonists undertake.

And there’s the small band of heroes that forms to take on the evil in “Doctor Sleep” that’s more than a little reminiscent of the similar groups in “Salem’s Lot” and “The Shining.”

There’s no doubting the heritage of the main character of “Doctor Sleep,” however: Dan Torrance is the grown-up and recovering alcoholic personification of little Danny Torrance, the boy who survives his father’s murderous attack in “The Shining.” Dan still has “the shine,” as old Dick Hallorann explained it.

But after chapters that ably demonstrate Dan’s journey to rock bottom as a substance abuser, his recovery is – blessedly – strong and he finds a new calling, as “Doctor Sleep,” helping patients in a hospice ease into the afterlife.

At the same time, a baby, Abra Stone, is born and grows to teenagerhood. Abra has the Shining in perhaps greater doses than Dan did as a boy, and Abra’s bright power draws the attention of True Knot, a traveling band of – well, psychic vampires is really the only way to say it – and the group targets Abra with murderous intentions.

Dan stumbles onto their plot and, with the help of a small, trusted group that includes the powerful young girl herself, intervenes.

As much as I enjoyed Dan and Abra and the others on the side of good, I enjoyed Rose the Hat, the charismatic but crazy leader of the True Knot. King establishes Rose as kind of the distaff version of Randall Flagg, the demon of “The Stand.” It’s not hard to see why Rose attracted followers. It’s likewise not hard to understand why the True Knot begins to fall apart with a good psychic shove from Dan and Abra.

The book, at just over 500 pages, feels leaner than some of King’s recent work, like “Under the Dome” and “11/22/63,” and its plot is as straightforward as can be.

So is the real feeling of dread the book inspired as I was reading it. I almost couldn’t wait to get to the end and find out if Dan and Abra and the rest came out okay.

While the band of heroes that takes on the True Knot is reminiscent of the heroes in King’s earlier books, there’s also no doubt that, in some ways, the book’s plot comes off as “Alcoholics Anonymous takes on Evil,” because AA and its life-saving disciplines – ones familiar to King himself – figure so prominently in the book.

King has acknowledged the perils of writing a sequel to a classic novel, and make no mistake, that’s what “Doctor Sleep” is.

But he needn’t  have worried. Whether intentionally or not, King has made “Doctor Sleep” a book that can stand on its own, a book full of failure and promise and recovery and ultimate triumph.

It’s not the end of the world

I’ve been on an “end of the world” kick lately, mostly subconsciously.

Not just looking forward to the return of “The Walking Dead” on Feb. 12, but enjoying “The Fades,” the new series on BBC America, and anticipating the movie version of “World War Z” this fall. Anticipation mixed with dread, actually, considering all the changes they’ve apparently made to the great Max Brooks episodic novel.

I didn’t get into the latest end-of-the-world opus I tried, however. I stopped reading David Moody’s “Autumn,” the first in a multi-book series, after I realized the glacial pace its end-of-the-world-through-the-flu-with-zombies story. Checking out the fourth book online, I noticed it said it took place something like 40 days into the story. No thanks. I’ve had enough of the glacial pace of “The Walking Dead” to do me for a while.

I was also a little disappointed in “The Night Eternal,” the third book in “The Strain” trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The series started strong with the original 2009 book about a plague of vampires threatening the world and the second book, “The Fall,” was pretty good if dire. By the time of the third book, things were pretty bleak and it’s no surprise that bad things happen to some characters you liked pretty well.

So I’ll happily make do with the return of “The Walking Dead” and the occasional glimpse of History’s “Life after People.” That series, which looks at the deterioration of the world’s landmarks after the end of humanity, is fascinating and forlorn.

And there’s always another reading of “The Stand.”

‘The Walking Dead’ flashes back

I don’t think any episode of AMC’s post-zombie-apocalypse series “The Walking Dead” has reminded me of Stephen King’s classic “The Stand” quite as much as tonight’s installment, “Chupacabra.”

Sure, it’s impossible for any end-of-the-world-and-after story to do anything but remind us of King’s epic. But tonight’s adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic book series had a couple of moments that evoked King’s masterpiece.

Spoilers ahead.

The episodes opens with a flashback to the early days of the zombie apocalypse as Shane, Lori and other survivors are stuck on the highway, watching in horror as the military drops napalm on a city — Atlanta, I’m guessing — to knock down an infestation of “walkers,” the show’s term for reanimated dead. The moment reminded me not only of “The Stand” but also “World War Z” and “The Strain,” two modern classics of the apocalypse.

But the moments most reminiscent of “The Stand” came when Daryl, the show’s new unlikely hero, is scouring the woods for a missing girl. He takes a tumble, ends up injured and gets a hallucinatory pep talk from an unlikely source: His brother Merle (Michael Rooker), the murderous racist from the show’s first season.

As Merle — whose return was teased in previews for this episode — taunts and insults Daryl into getting up and out of his predicament, a couple of echoes of “The Stand” came to mind: Nick Andros appearing to simple-minded Tom, telling him how to save injured Stu Redman, and also the internal battle going on inside Harold Lauder. In “The Stand,” Harold could turn bad or good and he struggles with his soul and his conscience before making a fateful and explosive decision. We haven’t yet seen what Daryl decides.

The episode also showcased the growing tension between Rick and Shane — who don’t yet know that Lori is pregnant and one of them is the father — and a freaky finale in which Glenn discovers the secret behind the peaceful farm in which they’ve taken shelter.

There are a lot of complaints online about the pace of “The Walking Dead,” but I’m enjoying it. Moments like those tonight, with Rick and Shane recalling their high school years and then debating the finer points of every-man-for-himself, and Merle’s brief appearance, are keeping me happy.

‘The Walking Dead’ turns up the drama

Tonight’s episode of “The Walking Dead” had it all. Illicit sex. The results of illicit sex. Family conflicts. Conversations on how to rebuild society after the end of the world.

And, oh yeah: A zombie.

(And some spoilery stuff, so beware.)

Now a few episodes into its second season, the AMC drama continues to give us some of the scariest, queasiest moments on TV. Tonight the “yuck” moment was an unfortunate attempt to get a zombie out of a well on the remote farm where the survivors of the zombie apocalypse have gathered.

That moment followed the scary bit, as the band of survivors lowers Glenn (Steven Yeun) on a rope down into the well as bait for the zombie.

Why? Well, apparently to avoid contaminating the well with zombie innards. But it doesn’t work out.

Glenn has the best scenes in the episode, acting as zombie bait, reacting to the idea of riding a horse and getting propositioned by the farmer’s daughter during a drug store scavenging trip that reminded me more than a little of “The Stand.”

As last week’s episode demonstrated, the interactions between the humans and humans are always more interesting than those between the humans and zombies. Deputy Shane’s shocking, last-minute act from the previous episode was back-burnered tonight. But I think we can feel a Shane explosion coming, can’t we?

Maybe that explosion will come courtesy of Lori, the wife of hero Rick and former paramour of Shane. Tonight Lori found out she was pregnant. Is Rick or Shane the father? And who can picture reed-thin Sarah Wayne Callies with a belly?

The preview for next week’s installment was nearly as good as tonight’s episode, as it showed us a glimpse of Michael Rooker, back as Merle, the violent racist the group encountered in the first season. When Merle comes back, what happens to his brother, Daryl, who has become a tender-hearted, crossbow-wielding cornerstone of the group?

We’ll know next week.

New life for “The Stand?”

More than 30 years down the road, I still vividly remember the thrill of reading Stephen King’s “The Stand.”

I was already a fan of King by 1978, when the book came out, having read “Carrie” and “Salem’s Lot” and “The Shining.” I admired “Carrie” for the writing exercise that it was — pieced together from newspaper articles and journal entries and what-have-you — but was genuinely creeped out by “Salem’s Lot” and “The Shining.” These were the real deal: Scary tales by a talented writer. We’re not talking hack stuff here. How many of us cringed even as we eagerly anticipated what we would find behind the door to Room 237 in “The Shining?”

So I was expecting a lot from “The Stand” but not quite sure exactly what. There was that strange cover on the hardback, for instance.

But when I dug into the book, boy oh boy. King’s tale of the end of the world and the real battle that begins after was everything I wanted from a novel: Great if flawed good guys like Stu and Larry and Frannie; a frightening bad guy in Flagg who surrounded himself with bullies and hoods, just as you would expect to happen in real life; characters like Harold whose fall from grace propelled the plot to new heights even as you wanted them to be redeemed.

Somebody, somewhere, has written the definitive article or thesis on all the book’s influences on the pop culture that followed it, and I won’t attempt to do that here. But how many books and TV shows (including my beloved “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) were able to go where they went because King had gone there first?

There was a pretty good TV miniseries adaptation of “The Stand” in 1994 featuring Gary Sinise in a damn-near-perfect portrayal of Stu Redman.

So it’s with a mixture of anticipation and dread that I read Hollywood is making a big-screen version of “The Stand.” It’s comforting knowing that Steve Kloves and David Yates, who wrote and directed the most recent “Harry Potter” films, are tentatively scheduled to make the movie (or movies).

I thought Stanley Kubrick horribly bungled the movie version of “The Shining,” but Kloves and Yates just might pull this off.

And even if they don’t, as the author himself  is fond of noting, “The Stand” will still be there, on my shelf, ready for the next time I want to jump into King’s post-apocalyptic world.
